Hervey Bay Dreaming

Though beautiful Rainbow Bay is closest to Fraser Island, it's the friendly, sub-tropical city of Hervey Bay, drawing its name from the expanse of clear water between the mainland and Fraser Island, that is the major departure point for most Fraser Island tours and the flotilla of whale watching cruises.

But Hervey Bay, Australia, has its own claim to natural beauty with loads of great activities.

Recreational fishing is one of the regions biggest draw cards with angling opportunities available from charter boats in the Strait or deep sea, reef, beach and estuary fishing, fresh water fishing in the creeks, river and local dam. The variety is extensive including barramundi, red emperor, marlin, whiting, mangrove jack, bream and more.

View coral reefs through a glass-bottom boat on either day or stunning night cruises. The pristine waters of Harvey Bay allow for amazing, crystal clear viewing. Plunge in to snorkel with the abundant marine life, often including turtles and dolphins, view the reef up close and feed the fish. Try your yachting skills on one of the fully-equipped yacht cruises. Sip champagne or beer and relax back and enjoy the stunning views.

Head inland to try horse riding in the beautiful country behind Hervey Bay, even join up with a supervised cattle muster and experience a touch of the Aussie bush, or play a round of golf at one of the local courses.

For unforgettable whale watching, Hervey Bay is the recognised Whale Watching Capital of the World, acknowledged by experts and tourists alike. Choose from dawn cruises, half, three quarter and full day whale tours. Hervey Bay based Oceania Project also provides the opportunity to embark on an extended tour.

Possibly the region is best know as the departure point for Fraser Island, Queensland. World Heritage Listed Fraser Island is the world's largest sand island supporting the world's only pockets of sub-tropical rainforest growing in sand, unique wildlife and flora plus pure-bred dingoes, expansive sandblows, deep pristine lakes and crystal clear creeks. Fraser is 4WD only, and who better to see it with than expects to know every nook and sand bog.

The Fraser Island Company run 1-day accredited eco-adventure tours to Fraser Island, a perfect option if your base is in Hervey Bay. If you'd like to come and stay a while we also run 2-day and 3-day luxury tours, a 5-day reef adventure, also spending time on beautiful Lady Elliott Island, and a dual eco tour incorporating a whale watching cruise along with exploration time on Fraser.

Hervey Bay travel takes only three and a half picturesque hours driving from Brisbane and the region is serviced by an airport and train line. Around Hervey Bay there's an abundance of family friendly caravan parks and self-contained apartments and units, holiday houses, up-market resorts, cosy B&Bs and oodles of backpacker lodges making it a great holiday destination for everyone.
